The solar project consists of a steel structure in the ground with racking above ground to accommodate fixed solar panels. The proponent was accepted through SaskPower's Power Generation Partner Program to supply solar electricity to the grid. Second Wind Power Inc. is owned by the Ocean Man First Nation and was built through a vendor relationship with miEnergy, a solar power installation company from Saskatoon.
Two solar projects were completed and came online May 13, 2021 and generating approximately 720 kilowatts and 280 kilowatts. Combined, these projects produce enough electricity to power almost 200 Saskatchewan homes.
At the time we had the biggest solar project in SaskPower’s Power Generation Partnership Program. It is the first project within our alternative energy company ‘Second Wind Power Inc.’
“The name ‘Second Wind’ is a tribute to Ocean Man‘s history of reestablishment, starting over and re-energizing.”
Ocean Man is proud to have built the solar project independently. It can be challenging during the best of times but we were able to build our solar project during COVID. Our own community members were part of the construction crew and are still working in the industry. We are pleased to enter into providing renewable resources through our green energy company. We may be a small First Nation but we are determined to be a big part of the Saskatchewan business community.
This solar project was no small undertaking. Their completion is a significant accomplishment for both SaskPower and Ocean Man First Nation which is another step forward in contributing to clean power in the province of Saskatchewan.
